When you are struggling with your child

As an adult it can be difficult to acknowledge our own need for help and support with mental health, but when it is your child who is lost, unhappy or in trouble, it can feel devastating.

Our children can be sources of love and pride, fear and bewilderment, pain and sadness. The responsibility can feel overwhelming and the child a mystery. There are so many books and websites offering advice that it can feel confusing rather than helpful.

I provide parenting sessions to give time and space to reflect on what a child might be experiencing, and to consider how this has impacted on the parental couple and the family, if they have other children.

New Parents

Becoming a parent can trigger all kinds of emotions, and some of these can be due to the pregnancy or birthing experiences, as well as the impact of a baby on already existing relationships. Finding it problematic to bond with a baby can be lonely and shaming as well; I provide sessions for parents with their babies so that these difficulties can be thought about, and to explore attachment issues.

Parents-to-be

Becoming a parent can raise big questions about what healthy caregiving is, how to navigate conflict, how to create loving bonds, how to support children in their learning, how to help them grow confident and resilient, none of which have easy or definitive answers. Becoming a parent can raise enormous fears and self-doubt, as well as trigger issues around the upbringing that has been received. I provide sessions for those about to embark on parenthood, to enable exploration of their own experiences of parenting, and the expectations and wishes that might be there for their own child.

I meet parents for consultations face-to-face in a Covid secure room or online, on zoom or Teams.

Do not hesitate to get in touch if you wish to make an appointment or have questions about whether therapy would be helpful for you as a parent.
